Importance of Food Labelling Regulations

Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 govern the labelling requirements of Pre-packaged Foods and Food Service Establishments and display of essential information on premises where food is manufactured, processed, served and stored.

Food regulations are essential to regulate and monitor the manufacture, processing, storage, distribution, sale and import of food so as to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. Food laws are enacted to protect the consumers against unsafe, adulterated, and misbranded food, and fraudulent practices and to facilitate the movement of food across borders.

Food Labelling is an effective tool to protect consumer health in terms of food safety and nutrition. Food labels convey information about the product’s identity and contents, and how to handle, prepare and consume it safely. With the increase in global trade and a shift away from the traditional face-to-face food producer and buyer relationship, there is a greater need to create food labels that are clear and can be trusted (Food and Agriculture Organization).

The subject is an important factor in food business processes (including prepackaged food and food service establishments), guiding critical considerations in product development, food labelling, food marketing, advertising and labelling claims and guiding consumer choices.

Food Labelling e-Learning (FLeP) is an Online Program equipped to provide the learner with an understanding of current food labelling legislation and its implication in business processes. The program is customized for Beginners and Advanced levels that meet the requirements of learners at different stages of their understanding of the subject and its business application.
